I again apologize for the delay. Hurricane Helene knocked out my power for a week, and just the sheer magnitude of the storm that damaged the area in which I lived my first eight years of life has devastated me in many ways. But I am thankful to have power and water… I have a well…MET
John 13:14 “So if I, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”
They are at the Passover meal, and Jesus got up and took off his outer robe, and took a pitcher and poured water into the basin. He says to the disciples, “Come, I will wash your feet.”
Peter being Peter said, “No, I will wash your feet.” Peter knew that the custom was only the lowliest of servants washed the feet of guests. He did not think of Jesus as one of the lowliest.
Jesus looks at him and says, “If you do not allow me to wash your feet, you are not part of me.”
Peter then says, “Wash all of me.”
Jesus tells him, “The only part of you that needs cleansing is your feet.”
Peter then agreed to allow Jesus to do what he had told them from the beginning.
After Jesus washed their feet… Jesus told them to wash the feet of each other as He had did.
What is the significands of feet washing?
I went to the Old Testament. It is a custom that is mentioned over and over. In Genesis it is mentioned three times and the first time was when God met with Abram (later Abraham) in Genesis 18:4. It is then that God told Abram that he and his wife Sarah would have a son. Of course they are to old to have children. They had Isaac and when Isaac met his wife to be Rebekkah the washing of feet is mentioned. It is also mentioned in Song of Solomon in 5:3, but it is Psalms 58:10 that I found interesting… It is:
58:10The righteous will rejoice when he sees vengeance.
He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
It is a Psalms about the coming of the Lord to rescue His people and it was written by David. It would Jesus own blood that will defeat the enemies of God.
I have never taken part in a foot washing ceremony, but I know many that have been. They told me that it was a blessing for them. Jesus will speak to the disciples this night about being servants to mankind.
I think we have forgotten that part of following Jesus. We have forgotten how Jesus was a servant to us. He came to be a suffering servant to everyone. He will return as the Lord of all.
Today’s Question:
How do you feel about not only having your feet washed but also washing the feet of others?
Ever in Christ’s love,
